Promotion to fire officer—whether by election or appointment—marks a defining moment in a firefighter’s career. Along with the badge comes a new level of responsibility, accountability, and expectation that extends far beyond the fireground. The Weight of the Badge: Fire Officer Readiness (NC) is designed to prepare new and emerging fire officers across North Carolina for the realities of leadership from day one.
This course is not a certification program. Instead, it provides a practical, no-nonsense foundation focused on what is truly expected of a fire officer in today’s North Carolina fire service. Participants will examine the transition from firefighter to officer, with an emphasis on leadership under pressure, decision-making, communication, and personal accountability both on and off duty.
Key topics include establishing command presence, leading and managing personnel, navigating firehouse dynamics, handling conflict and discipline, understanding operational expectations, and aligning with the culture and standards of the North Carolina fire service. Real-world scenarios and field-driven discussions will challenge students to think critically and apply sound judgment in situations they will face on the job.
This course is ideal for newly promoted officers, acting officers, or firefighters preparing to step into leadership roles. While it does not meet certification requirements, it may be used toward departmental or state-recognized continuing education hours where applicable.
The badge carries weight—this course prepares you to carry it well.
